Furthermore, Middle Eastern children are part of one of the most misunderstood ethnic groups in the United States (Erickson & Al-Timimi, 2001). This presentation serves to further define the Middle Eastern population, describe difficulties faced by these children and their families and how these may present in the play therapy room, and helps provide historical and cultural context that impacts the mental health of this population. Clinical considerations for play therapy when working with Middle Eastern children and their families include skills to overcome stereotypes, guidelines for supporting in identity development, considerations for toys in the playroom, and advocacy opportunities for working with parents and other stakeholders. Participants will gain greater understanding of this population, discuss and confront biases, and clarify best practices for play therapy with this population.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the Middle Eastern population and why defining the population is an arduous task for play therapists
  2. List 4 unique experiences of Middle Eastern children and families as well as potential stereotypes and discrimination this population may face and how these may present in the play therapy room
